Description |
If you love to put
hats on images (and what ARTchixie doesn’t!) now you can make a hat to
wear and look just like an ARTchix project yourself! Make your hats
quickly in an hour or complex and take all afternoon, your choice. This is
a fun project to do with children, art buddies and by yourself. Art Doll
hats are lovely gifts for birthdays, brides and heroines or to cheer up a
friend. You can make angels, fairies, mermaids, brides, clowns, cowgirls
or witches. They look beautiful as a centerpiece too.

Instructions |
Step One: Scan and
enlarge an ARTchix image so she will measure 2”-3” from the top of her
head to waist, then print it onto cardstock or paper. Now roughly cut it
out and glue it to a second piece of cardstock for more stiffness. I use
a glue stick for this, it will stay flat and no need to wait for it to
dry. Cut it out carefully, leaving a couple inches of paper below her
waist for a tab to glue to skirt. Set aside.
Step Two: Make the cone ( or you can use a purchased party hat
and jump to step three!)
Use the compass to make a circle, the diameter should about 8”, you will
use a third of the circle per hat, use the ruler to draw out pie shape
slices and then cut out.
If you want to rubber stamp or paint a design, do it now while your
skirt is flat.
Roll your slice into a cone, it will be stiff, try not to crease it at
the top, hot glue the seam with a .5” overlap. It’s kind of tricky, easy
to get gluey, don’t burn yourself!
Step Three: Clip off the top of cone about an inch to make the
waist of skirt, you will need to trim more in tiny increments to get it
to fit, then hot glue the tab to front & back, the cone will flatten at
the top. Now she’s ready to dress!
Step Four: To dress as a……
ANGEL: 3 big white doilies cut in quarters, start at
bottom, glue border edge down to hem and build up in tiers to top. Give
her beautiful golden angel wings and a star for a halo. Glue some clear
glitter to her bodice, wings and halo, then tie on a long ribbon sash.
To the inside of cone, hot glue 2 one yard pieces of ribbon on either
side for ties.
FAIRY: This fairy has a crepe paper skirt. Cut a piece of
crepe paper 10 “ deep and 15”wide, glue the ends together to make a
tube. Now with a needle & thread, hand sew and gather the top of the
tube to make a skirt. Fit onto the doll, tie the threads and hot glue in
place. You will need to smash the gathers down so her waist isn’t too
thick. Fold the extra paper up at the hem to make a cuff, hot glue the
bottom edge of crepe paper to the cone. Pull the pleats of the paper to
ruffle the edge. Now you can decorate the skirt, give her wings and a
crown, a sprinkle of glitter and a ribbon sash! To the inside of cone,
hot glue 2 one yard pieces of ribbon on either side for ties.
MERMAID: I made the mermaid separate and glued her whole
body onto the cone. Her tail is textured paper I rubbed with gold and
green metallic rub and then added clear glitter for shine. The water is
Angelina fibers in a sheer web, hot glued in patches and splashed up
behind her. I used white glue and glitter to sparkle the fish and hot
glued them in place, I leave the tails loose so they look more ”swimmy”!
To the inside of cone, hot glue 2 one yard pieces of ribbon on either
side for ties.
